Orthopaedics

Cloud PACS for orthopaedic practices.

X-ray and MR images from external institutes appear on the right patient automatically, straight in the medical record. No portals, no CDs, no server of your own to look after.

The problem

Why classic PACS solutions are a chore in orthopaedics

Not because imaging is complicated, but because the steps around it eat into the day. In a practice with a high X-ray volume, that adds up every single day.

  • Manual importing

External studies have to be downloaded, imported and assigned to a patient by hand.

  • Searching twice

Images sit apart from the practice software. Patient and study are looked up twice.

  • Awkward sharing

Sharing with referrers or patients runs on CDs, portals or large email attachments.

  • High cost

Purchase and operation are expensive. With many vendors, cloud only pays off for very large organisations.

The solution

How Unomed solves this in orthopaedic practices

Unomed Cloud PACS cuts the administrative work around images and reports by connecting radiology institutes, PACS and practice software.

The study list inside the practice software: incoming CT, MR and X-ray examinations for one patient with date, modality and report text.

Radiology institutes

Efficient collaboration with radiology institutes

  • Radiology institutes are connected directly.
  • Reports and studies come back into Unomed digitally, without portals, links or CDs.
  • Patients are suggested automatically; you confirm the match with one click.
The Unomed viewer opened over the medical record: a knee prosthesis from the front and from the side, next to the patient file in the practice software.

Medical record

Images right in the medical record

  • X-ray and MR images appear on the right patient in the record.
  • All images in one place, internal and external alike.
  • Open them from the practice software, without switching windows.
The sharing dialogue in Unomed: a searchable list of recipients with specialty and organisation, and a message field below it.

Sharing

Share images easily

  • Share images directly with colleagues, patients and referrers.
  • Recipients reply in the case chat.
  • CDs, portals and email attachments are a thing of the past.

PACS inbox

Images from outside? No manual import, no manual matching.

Studies from radiology institutes or hospitals land straight in the PACS inbox, without portals, links or CDs, and are matched to the right patient automatically.

  1. The study shows up in the inbox the moment it arrives.

  2. Unomed suggests the matching patient, including for name variants and duplicates.

  3. You confirm the match with one click, or change it.

Planning

Plan straight out of the PACS

mediCAD is connected directly. You open the image in Unomed Cloud PACS, plan in mediCAD, and the result is saved straight back into the PACS.

  • Planning starts from the open study, with no need to export the image first.
  • The result lands back in the PACS, on the same patient and the same examination.
  • No downloading, no re-importing, no copying between two programs.

Frequently asked questions about PACS for orthopaedic practices

How does Unomed use artificial intelligence to match X-rays automatically?

X-ray studies and reports arriving in Unomed from external institutes are analysed by an AI. Based on patient data, metadata and context, Unomed suggests the matching patient in your practice. Your team confirms the suggestion with one click: full control, far less manual work.

Who carries the responsibility, the AI or the doctor?

The AI in Unomed supports your team, it does not replace it. Every suggested match can be reviewed, adjusted or rejected. Medical responsibility stays with the treating physicians. Unomed makes sure routine tasks are done faster, so more time is left for treatment.

We work with several radiology institutes and clinics. Can Unomed cover all of them?

Yes. Unomed was built for exactly this kind of setup. Several external radiology institutes and clinics can be connected, so all studies land centrally in the Unomed Cloud PACS. AI-supported matching makes sure incoming examinations reach the right patient, no matter which institute the data comes from. Your team gets one consistent workflow, even across different partners.

How safe is our medical data in the Unomed Cloud PACS?

Unomed runs in Swiss data centres built for sensitive data. All connections are encrypted. Processing follows the Swiss Data Protection Act (DSG); the system was designed for medical data from the ground up, including messenger, cloud PACS and guest access.

Are we even allowed to store X-rays and reports in a cloud?

Yes, medical data may be stored in the cloud as long as the technical and organisational measures meet the DSG. That includes encryption, access controls, hosting in suitable data centres and transparent data processing agreements. Unomed meets these requirements and provides the corresponding agreements and documents for your practice.

Does Unomed work with our existing practice software?

Unomed is built to connect to common practice information systems. In a first call we clarify which interfaces exist and how deep the integration should go: from simply opening images out of the PIS through to studies, reports and documents flowing back into the medical record automatically.

Can we keep our existing PACS or replace it step by step?

Both are possible. Some orthopaedic practices start with Unomed for their external radiology institutes and keep the existing PACS running internally for a while. Others replace it entirely. We plan a migration with you that fits your size, your infrastructure and your appetite for risk.

Does Unomed support AI beyond the PACS, for reports and documentation?

Yes. Besides the AI that matches incoming studies, Unomed offers a medically trained AI assistant. It can support you with report text, referral letters, progress notes or administrative work, always under your control and based on the information already in Unomed.

What is a cloud PACS and why does it make sense for orthopaedic practices?

A cloud PACS is an imaging archive that does not run on a local server in the practice but securely in the cloud. For orthopaedic practices that means X-ray and MR images are available at any time, are easy to share with referrers, and no longer cause hardware and maintenance costs of their own. Unomed also connects the cloud PACS directly to your practice software and the Unomed Messenger.

Which devices can I connect to the PACS?

Any DICOM-capable modality, for example ultrasound, X-ray or MRI. The Unomed Cloud Connector that ships with it handles the connection.

What does the built-in DICOM viewer offer orthopaedic practices?

The Unomed DICOM viewer runs entirely in the browser and is built for daily practice. You open X-ray and MR images straight from the medical record, compare follow-ups side by side, zoom, rotate and measure. Follow-up checks, implant checks and left-right comparisons can be assessed without switching systems.

Which DICOM viewers are on offer?

The OHIF viewer from the Open Health Imaging Foundation by default. We connect other viewers on request.

Can I try the PACS first?

Yes. The free basic version lets you try the PACS with no risk and no commitment.
