Yes. Unomed's free DICOM viewer can be used at no cost, with no licence fees and no account. You can open and view DICOM files directly in the browser.

Your DICOM files are processed locally in your browser. Unomed does not store images on servers and does not transmit data to third parties. For particularly sensitive content we recommend using anonymised or pseudonymised studies where possible and following your institution's policies.

The free online DICOM viewer is intended for viewing, teaching and second opinions. It is not certified as a medical device and is not intended for primary diagnosis. Clinical decisions are subject to your institution's guidelines and the judgement of qualified professionals.

Standard DICOM files and image series from all common modalities: X-ray, CT, MRI, ultrasound, PET, mammography and CBCT from dentistry, oral surgery and implantology. Uncompressed data, RLE, JPEG, JPEG Lossless, JPEG-LS and JPEG 2000 are supported, in 8 and 16 bit, greyscale or colour. If a study cannot be loaded, the cause is usually a vendor-specific format, an incomplete data set or a very large volume series.

No. Unomed's DICOM viewer runs directly in the browser, with no installation and no registration. You choose DICOM files and start straight away.

DICOM (Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine) is the standard medical imaging devices use to store and exchange their images. Besides the image itself, a DICOM file contains its metadata: patient, examination, device, acquisition parameters and the position of the slice in space. The files often carry the extension .dcm, but frequently no extension at all, for example on patient CDs.

Copy the contents of the CD to your computer or insert it, and drag the whole folder into the viewer. It finds the DICOM files itself, including in subfolders, and skips DICOMDIR, the bundled Windows viewer and other extras. Alternatively, open the folder with the Open folder button.

In the free viewer you view studies locally; there is no server-side archiving and no sharing feature. If you want to store DICOM studies in a structured way, share them within your team or send them securely to hospitals, radiology institutes or referrers, Unomed Cloud PACS and Messenger are the right tools.

Technically yes, but it is not advisable: e-mail is not encrypted well enough for patient data, and studies quickly become too large for an attachment. Unomed Cloud PACS shares studies encrypted via a link, including with recipients who have no Unomed account.

The free viewer does not convert files. For a presentation a screenshot without patient data is usually enough. For exporting whole studies to other formats, a PACS with an export function is the right tool.

No. The free viewer shows slices in two dimensions and scrolls through the stack. Multiplanar reconstruction and 3D are part of the viewer in Unomed Cloud PACS.

Best on desktop and laptop in modern browsers such as Chrome, Edge, Firefox or Safari. On tablets and smartphones, viewing, two-finger zoom and scrolling work; for large CT or MRI series we recommend a device with enough memory and a current browser version.

Common causes are files without image data (reports, structured data), vendor-specific formats or incomplete data sets. If a study comes from a device you use regularly, tell us: we will look at the format.
