Submit your own ratingA hospital information system connects admission, treatment, nursing and discharge. Test complete patient journeys across professions and departments. A demonstration of individual screens does not establish whether the system fits daily work in your hospital.
These criteria help assess a hospital information system against your workflows. The linked comparisons provide further detail on image archives and communication.

Walk through a case involving admission, transfer, consultation and discharge. Check patient identification, encounter assignment, bed planning and transitions between outpatient and inpatient workflows. Information should be visible where the responsible professional needs it.
Let doctors, nurses and therapists test their typical tasks themselves. Compare templates, progress notes, task handovers and discharge reports. Changes need to remain traceable, and structured information should be reusable rather than entered again on every screen.
Check an order through approval, preparation and documented administration to discharge medication. Establish how allergies, changes, interruptions and collaboration with the pharmacy are handled. Ask for a concrete explanation of available checks and their limitations.
List your existing specialist systems before selecting a vendor. For each connection, ask about data direction, supported format, version and responsibility. HL7 FHIR is a healthcare data exchange standard; naming a standard alone does not demonstrate a working interface to your system.
Follow a case from the documented procedure to billing. Check which information is passed to coding, how missing services are identified and how queries are handled. Required tariffs, case classifications and exports depend on the country and type of care.
Establish access by role and department and the procedure for exceptional access. Ask about audit logs, data location, recovery and tested contingency workflows. Define which information must remain available during an outage and how records created during downtime are reconciled afterwards.
Request a plan for trial migration, data validation, interface tests, training and cutover. Historical encounters, documents and permissions need targeted checks. Agree acceptance criteria, responsibilities and a fallback procedure with each department if an important workflow fails at launch.
Include modules, interfaces, infrastructure, migration, updates, test environments and support over the same contract period. Establish response times, release planning and export options for a later switch. References from hospitals of similar size and clinical focus help assess effort and operation realistically.
A hospital information system, HIS for short, is the central software of a hospital or clinic. It brings together patient administration, medical and nursing documentation, service recording and billing, and connects the specialist systems such as laboratory, radiology and pharmacy. In German-speaking Switzerland the same kind of system is called Klinikinformationssystem (KIS).
A hospital information system is built for inpatient care in a hospital, with bed planning, nursing documentation and billing by case-based flat rates. Practice software covers the outpatient day of a medical or therapy practice. You will find the practice software comparison among the other software comparisons at the end of this page.
The comparison above shows 14 hospital information systems from vendors in Switzerland, Germany and Austria. Use the country filter to see only the systems from vendors in Switzerland.
How well it covers your own processes, the interfaces to the specialist systems you already run, the transfer of data from the current system, the cost over the whole term, and support. The eight criteria further down go through these points one by one.
