Free AI CHOP coder
Free CHOP coding, from the operative note, no account.
Unomed's free AI coder reads the procedure the way it is written in the operative report and suggests the matching CHOP codes: the main code, the supplementary codes the catalogue requires, the count and the side. No account, no installation, no browsing through the catalogue.
- Free, no account
- The full code set, not a single code
- Swiss classification of procedures (FSO)
The coder turns the text you enter into coding suggestions. Whether a suggestion is right is decided by the professional, not the tool. Unomed does not store the text you enter. Please do not enter names, dates of birth or anything else that identifies a person.

How it works
How to find the CHOP codes
Three steps from the procedure to the code set, without the catalogue or the manual.
-
Enter the procedure
Type the procedure in your own words, a line from the theatre list or a paragraph from the operative report. Abbreviations such as TKA, arthroscopy or ORIF, side and count are all fine.
-
Check the suggestions
At the top is the AI's code set: main code first, supplementary codes below, each with count, side and a short reason. Underneath are the closest catalogue entries if you want to compare yourself.
-
Copy the codes
Copy each code with one click into the case record. If you want this to happen automatically in your own system, the Unomed Medical API is described below.
Features
What the free CHOP coder does
A tool for the everyday question of which codes belong to this procedure. No download, no registration.
-
From the operative note, in your own words
You do not need to know what the catalogue calls a procedure. The coder splits the text into the individual procedures and finds the official entry for each.
-
The whole code set
In CHOP one procedure often needs several codes: implant, approach, spinal level, number of stents or vessels. The coder suggests the supplementary codes the catalogue points to.
-
Levels, count and side
Where the catalogue is graded by count or duration, the coder picks the matching level. If a code requires a side, it is given or flagged as missing.
-
With a reason
Each suggestion comes with a few words on why it was chosen, so you can check faster whether it fits the procedure.
-
Official catalogue
It is based on the Swiss classification of surgical procedures (CHOP) of the Federal Statistical Office, including its inclusion, exclusion and "code also" notes.
-
In the browser, on any device
Runs on PC, tablet and smartphone in Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari. Nothing to install, nothing to update.
Who it is for
Who needs a CHOP coder
For the quick answer to which code belongs to a procedure. For coding whole cases in your own system there is the Unomed Medical API.
-
Clinical coders in hospitals
They code every inpatient case and need the right code and its supplementary codes for rare procedures without searching the catalogue for long.
-
Surgeons
Whoever writes the operative report sees at once which details coding needs: approach, material, count, side.
-
Medical controlling
For checking coded cases and the question whether a supplementary code is missing.
-
Private clinics and visiting doctors
Where there is no coding department, a tool that works without training helps.
-
Training and education
Anyone learning CHOP sees on their own example which codes a procedure triggers and why.
-
Software vendors
If you want to build CHOP suggestions into a hospital information system, this is where you see what the interface returns.
CHOP in Switzerland
CHOP codes in Switzerland: what applies where
Anyone looking for a CHOP code usually also wants to know what it is used for and how it is built. The essentials in six tiles.
-
What CHOP is
The Swiss classification of surgical procedures (CHOP) codes procedures: operations, interventions, examinations and treatments. It is published by the Federal Statistical Office, with a new version every year.
-
How a code is built
Two characters for the chapter, then up to four more after the point for the detail. 51.23 is laparoscopic cholecystectomy, 47.01 is laparoscopic appendectomy.
-
Mandatory in hospitals
For inpatient stays, procedures are coded in CHOP alongside diagnoses in ICD-10-GM. Together they determine the SwissDRG case group and feed the federal statistics of hospitals.
-
Supplementary codes
Many codes require further details: the implant, the approach, the spinal level, the number of stents or vessels. The catalogue says so with "code also". A missing supplementary code can put the case in the wrong group.
-
Side and count
For many procedures the side is recorded: right, left or both. Other codes are graded by count or duration, for example by segments, stents or treatment days. The rules in the FSO coding manual apply.
-
And outpatient care?
In practices and hospital outpatient care, billing follows TARDOC and the outpatient flat rates, not CHOP. For diagnoses there is Unomed's free ICD-10 coder.
From the coder to the interface
When you need CHOP codes in your own system
The same coder is available as an interface in the Unomed Medical API: your system sends the operative text, the response contains the code set with count, side and reason. For hospital information systems, coding software and medical controlling.

Security
A suggestion, not a decision, and nothing is kept.
A coder you type operative notes into must do two things: keep the input to itself and leave the last word to the professional. Both are built in.
-
No storage
Unomed does not store the text you enter. To make the suggestion, the text is passed to a language model and then discarded.
-
No personal details
Coding only needs the procedure. Names, dates of birth or case numbers do not belong in the field and are not needed.
-
The professional decides
The coder suggests, it does not code. Every suggestion is checked by the person who adopts it, and your institution's coding guidelines take precedence.
-
Swiss provider
Unomed is Swiss software from Zurich. Using the interface in production comes with a contractual data protection agreement.
Frequently asked questions about the free CHOP coder
Is the CHOP coder really free?
Yes. Unomed's CHOP coder is free to use, with no licence fee and no account. You enter a procedure and get the codes.
Can I rely on the suggestions?
Not without checking them. The coder makes suggestions that must be checked by the professional who adopts them. Supplementary codes, levels by count and side deserve a second look. The tool does not replace the FSO coding manual or your institution's coding guidelines.
Which CHOP version does the tool use?
The version of the Swiss classification of surgical procedures of the Federal Statistical Office that is in force. Which one that is is shown directly below the tool. CHOP is reissued every year; Unomed switches to the new version once it applies.
What is the difference between AI coding and catalogue search?
Catalogue search shows the entries closest to your text in a fraction of a second. AI coding takes a few seconds, reads the whole text, separates the individual procedures and puts together the complete code set, with supplementary codes, count and side.
Can I enter a whole operative report?
Yes, up to about two pages of text. The more precisely approach, material, count and side are described, the more precise the suggestions. Please remove names and other personal details first.
How safe is my data?
Unomed does not store the text you enter. To make the suggestion, the text is passed to a language model. Do not enter anything that identifies a person, and follow your institution's rules.
Is CHOP also used in outpatient care?
CHOP is the classification for inpatient cases and the basis of the SwissDRG case groups. Outpatient billing follows TARDOC and the outpatient flat rates. What is required there is set by the tariff agreements.
Can I build the coder into my system?
Yes, through the Unomed Medical API. Your system sends the text and receives the code set as a structured response, for CHOP as for ICD-10. Get in touch with us.
Next step
CHOP codes not just searched, but in your own system?
The Unomed Medical API delivers CHOP and ICD-10 suggestions straight to your hospital information system or coding software. We will show you what that looks like with your texts.
