Dental software: eight selection criteria

Dental software needs to handle tooth-level findings, treatment across several visits and coordination with the dental laboratory. Ask vendors to demonstrate the following workflows using anonymised examples from your practice rather than comparing feature lists alone.

The general criteria are covered in the practice software comparison. These focus on dentistry; for a standalone dental laboratory, give greater weight to order management and production.

Practice software in Switzerland PACS and DICOM viewers

1. Dental chart and history of findings

Check how tooth status, existing restorations and periodontal findings are recorded and compared across visits. The key questions are whether the clinician can document efficiently at the chair and whether later corrections remain traceable by date and author.

2. Treatment plan and quotation

Walk through a case involving several visits and treatment alternatives. Ask how findings become a plan, then a quotation and finally recorded services. Changes, patient acceptance and completed steps should be visible without entering the same information twice.

3. Dental tariffs and invoice checks

Establish which tariffs apply in your country and how updates are installed. In Switzerland, these include DENTOTAR for private patients and the applicable insurance tariffs. Ask to see a sample invoice with material and laboratory items, including the correction process.

4. X-rays, CBCT and intraoral images

Test the connection to your existing devices and imaging software: does the patient record open the correct image, and does the association survive import? Ask about supported formats, export options and extra licences. The PACS comparison provides more detail on image archives.

5. Dental laboratory orders

Follow a laboratory order from the request with findings, scan and due date to the response and invoice item. Check how questions and changes are documented and who can access them. An in-house dental laboratory also needs suitable order, material and production workflows.

6. Recall, dental hygiene and scheduling

Scheduling needs to coordinate clinicians, rooms and appointment lengths. Ask to see recall intervals, reminders, cancellations and handovers between the hygienist and dentist. Establish which online booking and SMS functions are included, which cost extra and how contact preferences are respected.

7. Data migration and secure operation

Arrange a trial migration of patient details, findings, treatment plans and images. Check completeness and readability before switching. Also ask about data location, access controls, audit logs, backups and recovery, and how your team works during an internet or server outage.

8. Rollout, support and total cost

Compare costs over the same period: licences, imaging connections, migration, training, tariff updates and support. Plan the rollout with your team and establish support hours and incident response times. Reference practices of similar size and speciality are more informative than a generic demo.

Frequently asked questions about software for dentists

How does dental software differ from general practice software?

Dental software is practice software for dentistry. It covers what a medical practice does not need: the tooth chart and periodontal status, treatment planning with a cost estimate, billing by the dental tariff, and the connection to X-ray and the dental laboratory.

Which software for dentists is there in Switzerland?

The comparison above shows 28 systems for dental practices, orthodontics, dental hygiene and dental technology from vendors in Switzerland, Germany and Austria. Use the country filter to see only the vendors from Switzerland.

Is there dental software in the cloud or for the Mac?

Yes. Every card states whether a system runs in the browser or is offered as a program for Windows, Mac, iOS or Android. The information comes from the vendors.

How do I find the right dental software?

Narrow the list down by field and country first and read the reviews from other practices. Then go through the eight criteria further down, above all cost, data transfer from your current system, and support. Have two or three systems demonstrated before you decide.

Can I rate the software I work with?

Yes. Choose “Submit your own rating” at the top of this page, or “Rate it” on your system's card. Only the rating, the date, your text and the first letter of your name are made public.
