By the vendors' own account, in alphabetical order: AESKULAP by Kern Concept runs in over 1,300 practices in German-speaking Switzerland, amétiq siMed has over 7,000 users, Axenita by Axon Lab counts over 1,400 practices, E-PAT by Vitabyte over 2,500 users, vitomed by Vitodata around 5,000 physicians and WinMed over 2,000 physicians. MediWin CB by Ärztekasse is available to its members. tomedo, Swiss-MR, Elexis and curaMED publish no user numbers.
How widespread the electronic medical record is overall is shown by the Swiss eHealth Barometer 2026: 79 percent of the practice physicians surveyed keep their records fully electronically, a further 10 percent partially. 83 percent are fairly to very satisfied with their system.

Practice software in Switzerland: what does it cost?
Most of the larger vendors publish no prices; a quote follows a conversation about practice size, workstations and modules. Costs usually consist of a licence or monthly fee per workstation or user, the rollout including data migration from the previous system, training and ongoing maintenance. Locally installed solutions add server, backup and firewall.
Few figures are public: amétiq quotes a service fee starting at CHF 138, CHF 158 or CHF 537 per month depending on the edition. Elexis is open source and licence-free in its basic edition; Medelexis support packages start at CHF 1,200 per year and client. MediWin CB is free for Ärztekasse members, who pay for installation, maintenance and training. For therapy practices, PRAXSYS starts at CHF 30 per month.
Ranges circulating online, such as CHF 160 to 500 per month for a cloud solution, come from IT service providers and competitors and cannot be verified. A comparison of total cost over five years, including rollout and switching costs, is more reliable. How to gather it is described under criteria 1 and 12 below.

Which practice software supports TARDOC?
Since 1 January 2026, TARDOC and the outpatient flat rates have been in force, replacing TARMED. Flat rates are not chosen by hand but assigned by a grouper from diagnosis and services rendered; the tariff organisation OAAT provides vendors with the TarifMatcher for this. At the same time, the invoice standard moved from XML 4.5 to 5.0. There is no official TARDOC certification for practice software.
Vendors that have publicly confirmed the switch include Vitodata for vitomed, Axon Lab for Axenita, Swisscom for curaMED, Swiss-MR and Ärztekasse. For other systems, the vendor's website says nothing. That does not mean they cannot invoice, but it is worth getting written confirmation. The first annual tariff update is scheduled for 1 January 2027; how quickly a vendor delivers such updates is now a permanent criterion.

Cloud or local installation, Windows or Mac?
A growing share of systems runs entirely in the browser: Axenita, E-PAT, Swiss-MR, curaMED, Nereida and PRAXSYS describe themselves as web-based; amétiq siMed runs from its own cloud with apps for Windows, Mac, iOS and Android. WinMed, AESKULAP and vitomed leave the choice between local installation and data-centre operation. tomedo is built for Apple devices, MedicalConcept and curaMED run on macOS and Windows; most of the others require Windows.
With a cloud solution, data location is the decisive question. E-PAT, Swiss-MR, PRAXSYS, Vitodata and WinMed Cloud explicitly name data centres in Switzerland. The revised Data Protection Act has applied since 1 September 2023: the practice remains responsible for patient data even when a vendor hosts it, and processing by the vendor requires a contract. With a local installation, backup, firewall and updates are the practice's own job.

Does practice software have to connect to the electronic patient record?
Only partially today. Hospitals, care homes and birth centres must connect to the EPR, as must physician practices newly licensed since 2022; existing practices are free to choose. At the end of April 2026, around 136,000 records had been opened.
That changes with the planned Federal Act on the Electronic Health Record, whose dispatch the Federal Council adopted on 5 November 2025. It provides a record for the whole population and intends to oblige all outpatient providers billing through basic insurance to use it. The federal government expects introduction around 2030. Anyone choosing practice software today should ask whether the vendor plans a connection through an EPR community and HL7 FHIR interfaces. Vitodata names a connection for vitomed through the AD Swiss community; for most others there is no public statement.

Practice software in Switzerland: twelve criteria for the decision
Buying practice software, a practice management system or a physician information system is an important decision for your medical or therapy practice, and it calls for organisational, technical and financial consideration. The comparison above shows you the best practice software for your practice or organisation.
A whole series of further questions comes up around the choice of software as well. Here are the 12 most important points to bear in mind for a sound choice:
1. Cost structure
Examine the total cost of the software, including licence fees, implementation costs, training costs and any recurring charges.
Establish whether it is a one-off payment or a subscription fee, and how that affects your budget in the long run.
2. Functions
Make sure the software offers every function your practice, your healthcare organisation or your hospital needs. That includes an intuitive interface, billing functionality, a clear agenda, the ability to generate documents and forms, seamless integration with other medical systems, built-in image archiving and the possibility of integrations.
3. Infrastructure
Establish which PC infrastructure the practice software runs on. Is it a locally installed solution or a cloud solution?
If it is a locally installed solution, further consideration of security (firewall), backups and resilience is necessary. Establish as well which operating systems are supported.
If it is a cloud solution, internet speed and resilience are of major importance.
4. Scalability
Check whether the software is scalable as your practice grows. Do you intend to increase the number of staff and/or the number of sites in future? Do you want to bring in further specialists? Are those requirements supported? You should make sure the software can still meet your requirements in future, because switching always comes at a high cost.
5. Integration with existing and future systems
If you use, or want to use, other systems (accounting software, X-ray equipment, laboratory devices, online appointment booking and so on), you should make sure the new software can be integrated seamlessly, to avoid entering data twice and running into compatibility problems.
6. Connect interfaces
Establish which communication interfaces the software has. Can the software receive and send data? Is the communication compliant with data protection law? Does the software have a Unomed interface, through which you can communicate simply and lawfully with your team, your patients and your network?
7. Onboarding and support
Clarify how the changeover works. Is the data from your previous system migrated, and who is responsible for it? Does training take place at your practice, online, or is the software self-explanatory? Who carries out installation and configuration, and how long does the switch take while the practice keeps running?
Examine the support on offer: how quickly is a request answered, at what times is support reachable, and through which channels: telephone, email, chat or on site? Also clarify whether support is available in your language and whether it is included in the price or billed separately.
8. Updates, maintenance and outages
Find out about the cost and the schedule of software updates and maintenance services. Are software updates included in the price or do they have to be paid for separately? Are interruptions to operation to be expected during updates?
Ask about outages and how resilient the solution you choose actually is. System outages can restrict your operation considerably and in the worst case can put patients at risk.
9. Data security and compliance
Make sure the software meets the data protection rules and security standards required for health data. Check in particular whether the data is encrypted in transit and at rest, whether it is transmitted securely and where it is stored. Is access protected by two-factor authentication? Establish as well which data is left behind on the end device and whether a “zero footprint solution” is part of the product. Is access logged?
10. References and ratings
Read ratings from users of the software. Ask for references and speak directly with other users about their experience. Sometimes personal advice is the right route as well.
11. Requirements specific to your country
Consider local software. That way you make sure the statutory requirements and standards applicable in your country are met. Data protection laws in particular are not uniform internationally. The new Swiss Data Protection Act has fortunately been aligned with the European GDPR. Outside the EU, however, the legal position can differ considerably, which makes the corresponding solutions carry significant risk.
12. Long-term cost-benefit analysis
Carry out a cost-benefit analysis to make sure the software supports the profitability of your practice.
If your software supports the efficiency of your practice better than the alternative, then in most cases the additional cost will pay for itself quickly.

What is the difference between practice software, PIS and AIS?
They are three names for the same kind of system. Practice information system (PIS) and physician information system (AIS) emphasise the medical record; practice software is the everyday term. What is meant is always the software that brings together patient administration, agenda, medical record, service recording and invoicing in one practice.
Where can I find an official list of vendors?
Two directories are kept neutrally: the annually updated software catalogue of FMH Services and MediData's software finder, which lists every system connected to the MediData network. Neither gives prices or user numbers. Our comparison above adds ratings from practices.
Is there free practice software?
Elexis is open source and licence-free in its basic edition; you pay for support. MediWin CB is available to Ärztekasse members without a licence fee, against contributions for installation, maintenance and training. In both cases, rollout and operation still cost money, just not the licence.
How long does switching practice software take?
Expect several weeks to a few months. amétiq quotes four to eight weeks of preparation; the decisive part is migrating data from the old system. Before signing, clarify which data is transferred in what quality, what it costs and whether the previous vendor supports the export.
Does practice software run on a Mac?
tomedo is built for Apple devices. Browser-based systems such as Axenita, E-PAT, Swiss-MR or curaMED run on any computer with a current browser; amétiq siMed has its own Mac app. Classic Windows installations such as MediWin CB or AESKULAP need a virtual Windows environment on a Mac.
Which practice software suits therapists?
Physiotherapy, psychotherapy, occupational therapy and complementary medicine have their own systems that map scheduling and invoicing to the tariffs of those professions, for example PRAXSYS, ACS-Therapeut or SOFTplus. In the comparison above, the list can be filtered by target group.
